Banks and Banking Hours

Banking hours in India open from 10:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon starting from Mondays to Fridays, and on Saturday 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. There are also several banks in the country with branches open on evenings. Here are some well-known banks in the country:



  • State Bank of India- this largest bank in India founded in 1806 as Bank of Calcutta. This nation’s oldest bank operates to over 15,000 branches within the country. State Bank of India is dubbed as the world’s second largest bank wherein it has 52 branches in 32 countries.


  • Central Bank of India- established in 1911, this one of the oldest commercial banks in India has currently 3,168 branches across Indian states. On July 19, 1969, the Indian Government nationalized the bank.


  • Dena Bank- on May 26, 1938 one of the earliest banks in India was established-- the Dena Bank. It was incorporated as Public Company in December 1939 and dubbed as one of the most prestigious banks in the country performing well and has a good market share.


  • Union Bank of India- with headquarters in Mumbai, India, Union Bank of India is among the largest state-run banks in the country that was listed on the Forbes 2000. This bank has an asset of USD 13.45 billion and inaugurated by Mahatmi Gandhi, India’s major spiritual and political leader.


  • Canara Bank- this major commercial bank in the country is situated in Bangalore, India. It was established in 1906 as one of the oldest banks of India in which it changed its name to Canara Bank Limited in 1910. This bank has a network of 2, 641 branches spread across the country and other nations.


  • Oriental Bank of Commerce- it is one of the public sectors in the country that was established on February 19, 1943. Oriental Bank of Commerce has a headquarter in the bustling city of New Delhi. The bank offers different kinds of deposits such as current account schemes and savings.


  • IDBI Bank- this public sector bank is also known as Industrial Development Bank of India Limited. This one of the leading public sector bank was established in 1964 and currently the tenth largest development bank in the globe. It has built some institutions such as The National Stock Exchange of India and Stock Holding Corporation of India.
