Geography


Occupying an area of 3.28 million square kilometers, India is dubbed as one of the largest country in the world. The nation is divided into three main geological regions, the Himalayas, Peninsula Region and the Indo-Gangetic Plain. A great diversity of landforms surrounds among different regions of India such as rolling mountains, deep valleys, flat plains and numerous islands.


Location


The Republic of India is located in the Southern part of Asia, bounding the Bay of Bengal on the east, on the west by Arabian Sea and on the south by the Indian Ocean. The country is bordered to the west by Pakistan, to the northeast by China, Nepal and Buthan and to the east by Myanmar and Bangladesh.


Climate


India is predominated with four major climatic groupings: the tropical wet (a tropical rainy climate in which temperature ranges around 18°C), tropical dry (a combination of tropical arid and semi arid that dominates most regions of the country), subtropical humid (it is when locals experience hot summers and coldest months in which temperature falls down as low as 0°C) and montane (usually experienced by people living in northernmost areas, which subjects them to feel alpine climate). The country may be divided into different climatic zones but unified primarily by four seasons- winter, summer or pre-monsoon, monsoon or rainy season and post monsoon season.


Languages


The official language of the country is Hindi whilst English is the secondary official language. Around 70% of Indian population speaks Indo-Aryan, a branch of the Indo-European language family.


Culture/Custom


The culture of India is dubbed as one of the oldest cultures across the world. It is blessed with rich heritage and traditions. Despite the diversities of its culture in forms of dances, languages, religion and their festivals, the locals remain its close bond because of its common history hence, making India as a great nation.


Greetings


A firm handshake greeting and maintaining direct eye contact is the typical greeting practiced by Indians while giving the appropriate greeting for the time of day.  However, when men shake hands with women, the handshake should be less firm.


Gift Giving


During celebrations of life events such as birth or marriage, gifts of cash can be given to friends and members of the extended family. If you want to give flowers, do avoid in giving frangipani or white flowers as it is used in funerals. In addition, Hindus should not be given presents made of leather and Muslims gifts made of alcoholic products and pigskin.


Meeting Etiquette


Handshaking is a common practice in the country especially in large metropolitan area in which most educated locals are accustomed to dealing with foreigners. Men shake hands with other men whilst women do shake hands with other women too however, there are seldom instances that a handshake between a man and woman is prohibited because of religious beliefs.


Dress Custom


In having business meetings with the Indians, men should clad dark colored business suits and women should either dress conservatively in suits or dress as it indicates respect. During hotter or cold months you should dress suited for the season of the day.


People


Indian foods are characterized by its sophistication and subtle use of numerous vegetables and spices. The cuisine of India is deemed one of the most diverse dishes in the world, in which each cuisine is distinguished with a wide assortment of presentation and preparation. Adding influential role to the evolution of Indian cuisine are its religious beliefs and culture.


Food


India food is one of the most famous cuisines in the world.  Most of it is derived from the rich and varied character of the multicultural expanse of India.   It has been dubbed that India food are healthy and delicious and do not demand much skill and special ingredients.  In India meal, soups have always played an important role in which Shchi or cabbage soup had been served in the main course in India cuisine for more than a thousand years.
